Honey Bees on the Brink: How Pesticides and Climate Change Threaten Our Food Future
Science writers under the African Climate Reporters (ACR) are sounding a clear alarm: global honey bee populations are declining at a dangerous pace. This is not just a problem for beekeepers. It is a direct threat to food security, biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
In a statement marking World Honey Bee Day, ACR’s Head of Communication and Strategies, Ibrahima Yakubu, described honey bees as some of the world’s most important pollinators. They sustain agriculture, support wild plant life and help maintain the delicate balance of ecosystems. When bees are in trouble, our entire food system is in trouble.
Honey bees pollinate a large share of the fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds that appear on our plates. Without them: Crop yields fall, food prices rise, nutritional diversity declines.

Pesticides – A Silent Killer in the Fields
ACR identifies the excessive use of pesticides and harmful agricultural chemicals as a major driver of bee decline. These chemicals weaken bees’ immune systems, disrupt their navigation, and cause direct mortality.
Climate Change – Shifting Seasons
Climate change is making the crisis worse. ACR explains that changing weather patterns are disrupting the natural timing between bees and the plants they depend on, leading to reproduction slows and population decline.
